5 More Bus Safety Tips for Children
We all care about the safety and well-being of the children in our community. If your child rides a bus to school, here are five additional tips to teach him or her to help ensure bus safety.
- The driver cannot see you when you walk in front of or behind the bus. The driver may need to back up to make a turn or for some unexpected reason. He or she may also pull forward to continue the route, thinking the street is clear. Children have especially low visibility around tall vehicles such as buses. If you need to cross the street after getting off the bus, wait for the bus to pull away before doing so.
- Be careful when getting off the bus. If an article of clothing snags on an exposed screw or other surface, you could trip and get hurt. Watch your step and any loose articles of clothing when climbing up or down bus steps.
- Be very quiet around train tracks. The driver needs to look and listen for any approaching trains. This is very difficult to do when children on the bus are shouting, moving around or otherwise acting up. Sit still and quietly whenever you see a railroad track.
- If your school has many buses lined up at the beginning at end of the day, be very careful moving between them. Do not run out from behind a bus; you may surprise someone driving a car or another bus, and they may not be able to stop in time. Move slowly and keep your eyes and ears open while moving around buses.
- Wait patiently at the bus stop. Running and reckless playing put you at risk of stepping into the street, perhaps in front of a car. Try to play calmly, or just talk to your friends.
Unfortunately, all the caution in the world cannot protect you and your child from the reckless or irresponsible behavior of others. If you or your child is injured in a bus accident due to someone else’s negligence, contact a
