Improvements in School Bus Safety
Public transportation in America has come a long way, now featuring the subway, metropolitan bus systems, light rails. However, one of our oldest types of mass transit is still growing and changing. School buses are the largest system of public transportation in America. Their trademark yellow exterior makes them easily recognizable on our streets and in our neighborhoods. With over 20 million students choosing to ride school buses, it is imperative that they be a safe option for public transportation.
This is why bus manufacturers and scientists are teaming up to make a better safety system for every new school bus. With school bus accidents accounting for one third of all fatal vehicle accidents every year, these new safety systems can help to protect your children. There are currently three new developments in school bus safety that include:
- Integrated Collision Warning System (ICWS): combines a forward and side collision warning systems. This uses radar and lidar sensors.
- Obstacle Detection System (ODS): this system is designed to reduce blind spots the driver cannot see. Installed in the exterior of the school bus are ultrasonic sensors which can detect objects 4-8 feet away from the bus. This can prevent collisions.
- Transit Integrated Vehicle Based Safety System (Transit IVBSS): currently in production, but is designed to reduce collisions.
Today buses are much safer than in the past. However, accidents still occur and can affect the millions of children that rely on buses everyday to get to school.
