Avoiding No-zone Accidents with Buses

While buses provide considerable benefits to commuters and school children alike, there are notable dangers that come with the presence of large buses on the roadway. The size of most buses makes them potentially dangerous vehicles, especially when they are placed side by side with much smaller, personal automobiles.

Many accidents between buses and smaller automobiles can be traced back to incidents involving the no-zone areas on a bus. A “no-zone” area is an area on a bus, or other large automobile, in which visibility is limited due to the inability of the driver to monitor every aspect of the vehicle. When smaller cars drive in these areas, accidents are likely to occur as the bus driver is unaware of the presence of the other car.

Fortunately, by familiarizing oneself with this danger, individuals can help avoid these damaging accidents and keep our roadways safe.

Front No-Zones

Buses that have an elevated driver’s seat may have a front no-zone area. In this area, smaller cars may be difficult for the driver to see if the car is diving too close to the front of the bus. To avoid these accidents, divers of smaller automobiles should be sure to remain a safe distance in front of the bus to ensure visibility at all times.

Side No-Zones

Perhaps the most dangerous no-zone areas of buses involve the side no-zone areas. The length of most buses makes it impossible for a bus driver to always see other cars driving along side of them, even with the use of mirrors. To stay safe when driving next to a bus, make sure that you can see the face of the driver in his or her side mirror. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t see them, they can’t see you.

Rear No-Zones

Many buses will have limited or zero visibility with rear-view mirrors, and so are often unaware of drivers behind them. To ensure safety when driving behind a bus, make sure that you are far enough behind the bus that the driver can see you in his or her side mirrors. Do not rely on the rear-view mirror.
